Minister Mavetera calls for urgent Digital Revolution for faster development

Zimbabwe is taking bold steps toward becoming a digitally driven economy, with Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal, and Courier Services, Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, actively engaging global stakeholders to position the country as a technology and innovation hub. Representing Zimbabwe at the prestigious Mobile World Congress 2025 (#MWC25) in Barcelona, Minister Mavetera used the platform to advocate for digital transformation, connectivity, and economic growth in line with government’s Vision 2030 and targets defined by the National Development Strategy document.

With Zimbabwe aiming to attain upper middle-income economy status by 2030, Minister Mavetera emphasized the need to leverage digital technology to accelerate development. She participated in key discussions on artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and public-private partnerships, highlighting Zimbabwe’s progress in digital policy and infrastructure development.

One of the key outcomes of Zimbabwe’s participation at MWC25 was the country’s selection as the Southern African representative for the Giga Project—a global initiative aimed at accelerating school connectivity. This initiative will provide solar-powered internet access to schools, ensuring that students in underserved areas have access to digital learning opportunities.

“We are thrilled to be part of the Giga Project and to contribute towards bridging the digital divide. Every child deserves access to opportunity, and connectivity is a key enabler for education and economic empowerment,” Minister Mavetera stated.

During the conference, Zimbabwe showcased its commitment to AI, cybersecurity, and digital skills development. Minister Mavetera shared insights alongside ministers from Uzbekistan, Madagascar, and Malaysia, demonstrating how policy innovation and infrastructure development are shaping Zimbabwe’s digital economy.

As part of efforts to solidify global partnerships, the minister also met with Dr. Cosmas Zavazava, ITU-BDT Director, and Potraz Director-General Gift Machengete to discuss the implementation of key International Telecommunication Union (ITU) programs in Africa, particularly in Zimbabwe. These include:

The Digital Skills Development Program, aimed at equipping Zimbabweans with essential tech skills.

The AI Acceleration Centre, which will position Zimbabwe as a leader in AI-driven innovation.

The National Broadband Mapping Plan, ensuring equitable and inclusive internet access across all communities.

Reflecting on her participation at MWC25, Minister Mavetera expressed optimism about Zimbabwe’s digital future.

“The energy at MWC was electric! Collaboration, inclusion, and action are key to shaping an equitable digital era. Zimbabwe is ready to turn dialogue into impact and accelerate our journey toward a technology-driven economy,” she said.

By actively engaging with global tech pioneers, investors, and policymakers, Zimbabwe is strengthening its digital infrastructure and innovation ecosystem, paving the way for sustainable growth and positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s digital economy.

As the country continues its journey toward Vision 2030, technology and digital transformation remain at the forefront of Zimbabwe’s economic strategy ensuring that no community is left behind in the digital revolution.
