An alarming incident at Bijou Farm in Gweru, owned by Ming Chang Sino-Africa Mining Investments, has raised critical questions about mining safety and investor protection in Zimbabwe. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, shows an employee operating an excavator in a dangerous and reckless manner, allegedly with the intent to harm others.

The actions, described as irresponsible and potentially life-threatening, have sparked a public debate on the proper use of heavy machinery and the exploitation of investors by those entrusted with operational responsibilities. In a press release issued recently Ming Chang Sino-Africa Mining Investments expressed deep regret over the incident, acknowledging the concerns raised by the public.

“We deeply regret the events that transpired and extend our sincere apologies to all stakeholders affected by this unfortunate situation. While steps were taken to restrain the individual, we recognize that the continued use of force, as shown in the footage, was excessive and unacceptable,” the statement read.

The company reiterated its commitment to the rule of law and vowed to cooperate fully with authorities to ensure the matter is thoroughly investigated. Industry experts have been quick to highlight the dangers posed by the misuse of heavy equipment like excavators. Speaking on the incident, Nxolani Mathambo, a mining professional, expressed outrage at the recklessness displayed.

“How can someone take an excavator and spin it like that? An excavator is a very dangerous machine, capable of causing immense damage. It’s unacceptable behavior that puts lives at risk,” Mathambo said. Excavators are designed for precision and heavy lifting in mining and construction but can become lethal weapons when misused. Their size, weight, and hydraulic power demand trained operators who prioritize safety.

Dosman Mangisi, CEO of the Junior Chamber of Mines, echoed Mathambo’s concerns, emphasizing the importance of responsible equipment handling. “An excavator is not a toy. Misusing such machinery not only endangers lives but also damages the reputation of the mining industry.

This incident highlights the need for rigorous training, strict protocols, and a commitment to professionalism from all stakeholders in the sector,” Mangisi stated. The incident has also reignited concerns about how some individuals exploit investors in Zimbabwe’s mining sector. Experts argue that the lack of accountability and professionalism undermines investor confidence and jeopardizes the growth of the industry. “Ming Chang’s swift acknowledgment of the issue and their promise to enhance conflict resolution training is commendable. However, this should serve as a wake-up call for the entire sector to adopt stricter workplace ethics and safety measures,” added Mangisi.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched an investigation into the matter. Authorities have called for witnesses to come forward to assist in determining the full circumstances of the incident. As the case unfolds, the mining sector faces mounting pressure to address workplace conduct and operational safety. Incidents like these underscore the urgent need for professional practices to protect both investors and workers while fostering trust in Zimbabwe’s mining industry
