In a commendable corporate social responsibility initiative, Haulin Quarry Mine has taken the lead in rehabilitating a 2.5 km stretch of road in Pumula North, Bulawayo. The roads, which had been severely damaged by heavy rains, are being repaired using materials produced by the company, including pavers, cement, and quarry dust.
Speaking on the development, Sikhululekile Moyo, Councillor for Ward 17, expressed appreciation for the project, emphasizing its significance for the community. “This is a community-driven initiative, and we are grateful that Haulin Quarry Mine is working with local youths to fix and maintain the roads. The rainy season had left the roads in a deplorable state, making it difficult for motorists and pedestrians. Their intervention has come at the right time,” Moyo said.
The initiative has been widely welcomed by local residents and motorists who had been struggling with poor road conditions. Samantha Ndlovu, a regular commuter in the area, praised the company for its efforts. “Driving through this stretch had become a nightmare due to the potholes. This rehabilitation work has made a significant difference,” she said. Mandla Dube, another motorist, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how the poor road conditions had made driving extremely challenging.
Haulin Quarry Mine’s initiative is a testament to the vital role that businesses can play in community development. By leveraging their resources and expertise, companies can contribute meaningfully to local infrastructure, improving the quality of life for residents. Beyond providing employment opportunities, businesses that invest in local projects help foster goodwill and demonstrate commitment to the communities they operate in.
The collaboration between Haulin Quarry Mine and local youth in the road rehabilitation project is particularly noteworthy. Engaging the youth not only ensures skills transfer but also empowers them economically, creating job opportunities while addressing critical infrastructural challenges.
This project sets a positive example for other companies operating in Zimbabwe’s mining and construction sectors. As corporate social responsibility becomes an increasingly important aspect of business operations, such initiatives highlight the importance of private sector involvement in national development goals.
With the rainy season posing ongoing challenges to infrastructure, continued collaboration between companies, local authorities, and communities will be essential in ensuring sustainable development. Haulin Quarry Mine’s commitment to Pumula North serves as a model of how businesses can make a lasting impact beyond their core operations.
