Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Acting President, Professor Welshman Ncube, has extended heartfelt congratulations to veteran opposition activist and lawyer Tendai Biti for being honored with the prestigious 2024 Walter Kamba Rule of Law Award. The accolade, named after the renowned Zimbabwean legal luminary and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe, recognizes exceptional commitment to justice, democracy, and the rule of law.

“Congratulations, my brother, on being honored with the 2024 Walter Kamba Rule of Law Award. This recognition is a testament to your tireless dedication to justice, democracy, and the rule of law in Zimbabwe,” Ncube said in a statement. “Your courage and resilience inspire us all to keep fighting for a fairer, better nation.”

Biti, a founding member of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and an esteemed lawyer, expressed his gratitude on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. “We are honored and humbled to be awarded the 2024 Walter Kamba Rule of Law accolade in recognition of a lifelong commitment to human rights, the law, and excellence,” he posted. He also described the experience of receiving the award from Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke of South Africa and Zimbabwean Justice Moses Hlatshwayo as “a double honor.”

The Walter Kamba Rule of Law Award, established in memory of the late Professor Walter Kamba, is one of the most esteemed accolades in the Southern African legal community. It is awarded to individuals who demonstrate outstanding contributions to the defense and promotion of the rule of law. Kamba, celebrated for his unwavering principles during Zimbabwe’s early post-independence years, became a symbol of intellectual integrity and moral courage.

Tendai Biti’s recognition is seen as a culmination of decades of advocacy for human rights, constitutionalism, and good governance in Zimbabwe. As a leading opposition figure and a seasoned lawyer, Biti has frequently stood at the forefront of legal battles defending civil liberties and holding authorities accountable. His work has earned him widespread respect locally and internationally, often at great personal and professional risk.

Ncube and Biti share a longstanding camaraderie forged in the crucible of Zimbabwe’s tumultuous political landscape. Both lawyers by training, they have been central figures in the country’s opposition movement, advocating for democracy and constitutionalism while navigating complex and often hostile political terrain. Their partnership dates back to their days in the MDC, where they worked side by side to challenge autocratic governance. Despite factional splits in the opposition over the years, the two leaders have consistently demonstrated mutual respect and a shared commitment to the broader fight for democratic reform.

The recognition of Biti with the Walter Kamba Rule of Law Award serves not only as a celebration of his individual achievements but also as an acknowledgment of the collective struggles of Zimbabwe’s opposition leaders and activists. It reinforces the enduring relevance of the ideals of justice, fairness, and accountability in a nation striving for a brighter future.

This latest honor for Biti is expected to invigorate calls for stronger advocacy for human rights and the rule of law in Zimbabwe, with both Biti and Ncube remaining central figures in the nation’s ongoing quest for democratic transformation.
